EAIF at R20 Austrian World Summit
R20, the international not-for-profit organisation championing renewable energy and other green infrastructure projects, is holding its 2019 World Summit in Vienna, Austria on 28th and 29th May. The event is organised by the University of Zurich (USC Arnold Schwarzenegger Institute), in partnership with The Climate Infrastructure Partnership.
Emilio Cattaneo, Executive Director of the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund’s (EAIF), is speaking on a panel discussing the private sector investment climate for clean energy projects. EAIF is a member of the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG).
Mr Cattaneo will talk about the success of the PIDG/EAIF ‘blended finance model’ in mobilising private sector capital for renewable energy projects across Africa. The Fund is a pioneer in supporting green energy projects, mainly in solar and hydropower.
In the past year, EAIF has announced its participation in renewable energy projects in Cameroon, Mali and the Kikagati hydro project in Uganda. Kikagati is the 10th renewable energy development EAIF has backed in Uganda, demonstrating the benefits of replicating experience, financial structures and legal documentation. To date, EAIF has financed 138MW of renewable generating capacity in Uganda, representing a total investment of US$126 million.
Speaking alongside Mr Cattaneo are representatives from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the ICLEI (the global organisation of local governments tackling climate change issues) and from Gold Standard, the climate security and sustainable development organisation.
