In 2015, the Gigawatt Global solar plant was opened in Rwanda. It was the first utility-scale, grid-connected, commercial solar plant in East Africa. It was a pioneer.
Producing 8.5MW of electricity, it increased Rwanda’s energy generating capacity by 6%.
Built on land leased from an orphanage (which benefits from the rental income from the plant), debt finance came from the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund and the Netherlands development finance institution, FMO. Gigawatt Global’s equity is owned by Scatec Solar ASA, Norfund and KLP Norfund Investments Ltd.
